Four Compartments of the Lower Leg:
-Anterior
-Lateral
-Posterior Superficial
-Posterior Deep

Anterior Compartment
Tibialis Anterior
*major cause of shin splints
-acts like a rope from the knee to the bottom of the foot
-muscle one of two for the 'stirrup' of the foot
Extensor Digitorum Longus (EDL)
Extensor Hallucis Longus (EHL)
Peroneous Tertius (Fibularis Tertius)
-one of the three peroneal muscles
-the insertion is at Jones point
*Evil Tom, Dick, and Harry (Potter)*

Lateral Compartment
Peroneous Longus (Fibularis Longus)
-muscle two of two that forms the 'stirrup' of the foot
-uses the malleolus as a pulley system during plantar flexion
-one of the three peroneal muscles
Peroneous Brevis (Fibularis Brevis)
-one of the three peroneal muscles
-insertion is at Jones point
~Evulsion fracture: tendon pulls off a portion of the bone when the muscles stiffens (when it occurs at jones point it's called a jones fracture)

Posterior Superficial
Gastronemius
Soleus
Plantaris
-may be absent in certain people
The three muscles of the Posterior Superficial group form the triceps surae group which is also known as the calf.
