Employment Settings for the Athletic Trainer
There was a dramatic transformation since 1950, due largely in part to the efforts of the NATA (National Athletic Trainer's Association). AT's started out in the collegiate setting, progressed to high schools and can now also be found in hospitals and clinic settings.
The following are other places an AT can be found: sports medicine clinics, corporate settings, military, physician extender, and researcher, etc.
Accredited Athletic Training Education Programs
The entry level athletic training education programs are undergraduate and graduate. The Advanced graduate athletic training education programs are designed for individuals that are already certified ATC's.
Requirements For Certification As An Athletic Trainer
- Guidelines are set by the National Athletic Trainer's Association Board of Communication (NATABOC)
- If you pass you get credential of ATC
Continuing Education Requirements ensure ongoing professional growth and involvement. These requirements must be met to retain certified. Its usually around 80 CEU's every three years.
State Regulation of the AT
Regulation may be in the form of:
- Licensure- Limits the practice of athletic training to those who have met minimal requirements established by a state licensing board, it is the most restrictive of all forms of registration.
AT and the Athlete
The major concern on the part of the ATC should be the athlete. All the decisions made by the ATC impact the athlete. The inquired athlete must always be made aware of the how, when, and why that dictates the course of injury rehabilitation. The athlete must be educated about injury prevention and management. Also, instructions should be provided regarding training and conditioning. The ATC must inform the athlete to listen to his/her body in order to prevent injury.
AT and Parents
The AT must keep the parent informed with injury management and prevention. The patients decision regarding healthcare must be a primary consideration. the insurance plans may dictate care like the selection of a physician.
