Bony Landmarks
- Angle- Projecting corner of a bone ~Inferior & superior angle of the scapula
- Border- Linear bony ridge, often the edge of a bone ~Vertebral & Axillary border of the scapula
- Condyle- Rounded projection that forms a joint; knuckle shaped ~Medial & lateral condyle of the leg
- Crest- Very prominent linear elevation ~Iliac crest (top of the hip)
- Epicondyle- Projection over a condyle ~Medial & lateral epicondyle of the elbow
- Facet- Small, smooth, shallow depression articulating with another bone ~Vertebral facets
- Foramen- Hole or opening for blood vessels and nerves to pass ~Foramen magnum
- Groove- Depression that accommodates a structure ~Bicipital groove
- Fossa- Shallow depression in a bone ~Infra & supra spinous fossa (scapula)
- Head- Rounded end of a bone (usually superior)
- Line- A narrow bony ridge that is less prominent than a crest
- Meatus- Tube-line opening in a bone that forms a tunnel or canal ~External auditory meatus (actual holes that go into the head through the ears)
- Notch- Deep indentation or a narrow gap in a bone ~Jugular notch
- Process- General term for any prominence or prolongation from a bone ~Spinous process
- Protuberance- Knob-like protrusion of a bone ~External occipital protuberance
- Ramus- Long branch-like bony prolongation of a bone ~Ramus of the pubus
- Ridge- Elongated projection from a bone
- Spine- Sharp, slender projection of a bone
- Trochanter- Large rough process found only on the femur
- Tubercle- Rounded projection usually blunt and irregular
- Tuberosity- Large, rounded rough projection
